The last time Miocic and Cormier faced each other was during the last UFC 252.
Stipe Miocic was elected the greatest heavyweight in the history of the UFC. It was decided after he crushed another legend, Daniel Cormier in an unprecedented championship and with a unanimous decision.
Miocic won with a 2-1 lead. After declaring that this fight would be his last, Cormier gave up everything for the five rounds of the fight. Although he retired as one of the greatest fighters of all time, his last fight was a total loss.
Cormier accidentally elbowed Miocic in the eye during the first round. This is the third time Cormier has accidentally elbowed him in history.
During the second round, the two fighters struck clean blows.
Miocic closed the roundwith a flush that knocked Cormier down almost 10 seconds after the end of the round.
Although he was incredibly lucky to survive the bell, he came out in the third round injured. During this third round, Cormier suffered a blow to the eye a few seconds before the bell.
During the replay, it could be seen that Miocic’s fingers penetrated deep into Cormier’s eye socket.So, Cormier went back to round four with his left eye injured and very swollen. During the rounds, he said he could not see.
During the fifth round, the two fighters hit each other hard to stay on their feet from exhaustion. Cormier could not defend himself enough as he could not see out of his left eye.
Mark Goddard, the referee, did not stop the fight indicating that at no time did he see the blow. When the fight was over, Cormier was rushed to the hospital without doing any media interviews.
No doubt a fight that gave a lot to talk about and was controversial. Both Miocic and Cormier fans were a little confused by the jury’s decision even though the replays showed the obvious.
